What are Head and Neck Orthoses?
Head and neck orthoses are devices designed to help support, align, or correct the function of the head and neck. They are commonly used for patients who have suffered injuries, undergone surgery, or have conditions affecting the neck and spine.
Types of Head and Neck Orthoses:
- Soft Collars: These are flexible and often foam-based supports. They are often used for minor injuries providing gentle support and limiting motion to relieve pain.
- Hard Collars: These are more rigid and therefore provide greater support. They are used for more serious injuries, such as fractures or after surgery to immobilise the neck to facilitate healing.
- Cervical-Thoracic Orthoses (CTOs): These extend from the neck to the upper back. They provide support for both the neck and the upper spine and are used in more severe cases where more control is required like spinal injuries, after complex surgeries or for head drop cases which can present, for example, in patients with Motor Neurone or Parkinsons Disease.
When Are They Used?
Orthoses are used in various scenarios:
- Injuries: Following accidents that result in fractures or dislocations of the neck.
- Post-Surgery: After procedures on the spine or neck to ensure proper alignment during healing.
- Chronic Conditions: For conditions like arthritis or cervical spondylosis, where long-term support and pain relief are needed.
- Neurological Disorders: In cases where muscle control is impaired, providing support to maintain proper posture and prevent further injury.
Benefits of Head and Neck Orthoses:
- Pain Relief: By limiting movement, they reduce pain from muscle strain and nerve pressure.
- Stability: They provide stability and prevent further injury during the healing process.
- Support: They help in maintaining proper posture, which can aid in overall recovery.
